    Changing the Background for DeployStudio

DeployStudio has a very nice background image that it uses by default for the NetBoot set. But you can customize the image that’s used if you wish to have something more, well, customized. Simply mount the DeployStudioRuntime sparseimage file from the DeployStudioRuntime nbi file that was created when you elected to generate the NetBoot set. You can do so by simply opening the nib file and then double-clicking on the sparse image. From here, browse into the System and then the Library and then the CoreServices directory in the NetBoot set. From here find the DefaultDesktop.jpg file. Replacing that file will replace the background that is used when you boot…

    Cleaning Up Podcast Producer

THIS CAN BE A VERY DANGEROUS COMMAND, USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. I’ve been seeing Podcast Producer deployed into a number of different types of environments. One of these is into school environments with quarterly turnover cycles. In these environments, all blog posts over a certain number of days old should be deleted routinely (namely when the quarter changes). Because in some environments, there can be hundreds, if not thousands, of posts, removing old content is cumbersome at best. Never fear, the find command can look at just items that have aged a certain number of days. This is accomplished using the -mtime options. The find command can also…

This is the 1,500th Post on https://krypted.com/

Friday the 13th November 13, 2009 represents the day that the 1,500th post goes online at krypted.com. The site was started in the waning minutes of 2004 (darn New Years resolutions), which puts us at 5 years come new years this year. I hope that you have all enjoyed and I look forward to the next 1,500 posts. Having said that, it’s time to move. Over the course of the next two weeks I anticipate a little downtime as I do not have as much bandwidth to do the migration as perfectly as I would have if it were for a customer. My apologies in advance! 😉

    xsanctl

The xsanctl command allows you to manage basic events on an Xsan. The following options are available to xsanctl: disksChanged – Causes the FSS to scan the available LUNs mount – Mounts a volume ping – Verifies FSS (File System Server) responsiveness sanConfigChanged – Causes the FSS to reload the volume configuration file unmount – Unmounts a volume These options are used following the xsanctl command and are then followed with any options they themselves may have. For example, if you want to mount a volume you would run the xsanctl command followed by the mount option/verb and then the name of a volume, like so (assuming volume name of…

    Prepping for Ski/Snowboard Season?

If you’re addicted to your mobile device, be it an iPod touch or an iPhone, and you’re heading out to the slopes for some fun in the cold sun then consider a few little toys that might help facilitate that cold weather use of your technology. The first is the Burton Audex jacket. I have one of these with the soft switch tech built into the arms and it works exactly as advertised. The only thing I don’t like about it is that I need to keep an older iPod around for the switching to work. But what if you crave using the touch devices without taking off your gloves.…

5 Tools for Extending Google Apps

Google Apps has a nice little API that was developed for interfacing with it programatically. Well, a number of other vendors have been building around it for a little while and there’s starting to be a nice little suite. Here are some to look at: Manymoon: Allows more granular document sharing, mail management and security with your documents, tasks and projects Socialwok: Allows you to build a social network on top of Google Apps Smartsheet: Project, sales pipeline and resource tracking. Allows for collaboration with external users as well. Tripit: allows you to see your travel plans and collaborate with others on their travel plans (wish American Express Travel had…

Building your Final Cut Server Warm Standby

The Warm Standby is what I’m calling the Passive portion of the Active-Passive Final Cut Server pair. The most important data that you’ll want to load into your Final Cut Server Warm Standby is the actual Final Cut Server PostgreSQL database. The other data (plist files, etc) are going to end up getting synchronized as well, but first let’s take a look at how to setup coupling between the two servers. When you

    Kevin Smith at MacWorld?

Great. Now Kevin Smith is going to be speaking at MacWorld! Really?!?! How do you think my Collaboration Services session is gonna’ stack up to that? I guess it’s cool enough to make the email blast about Kevin Smith (very bottom, very small print, but heck it’s there – or wait, is that actually one of Arek’s – DAMN – oh, mine is right below Arek’s in even smaller print!!!), but am I now going to be this huge letdown, after him. I mean, I’ve never made a film for Prince! I’ve never directed a movie, much less one as great a cinematic treat as Mallrats! I never wrote something…
