I remember the first time I stumbled across this. It was as though someone had opened the pantheon of movie gods from my younger years and run wild across my brain, picking them out in quick succession, placing them onto a page of lyrics, then setting them to music and putting them in front of a movie. The movie was full of references and I knew for the first time that I was not alone in one of my great and semi-secret loves: science fiction (not wanting of course to get branded a total nerd and shunned by girls/shoved in garbage cans as a teenager). I don’t think I’ve told anyone this before (sober at least), but my favorite song is this one. I have great loves in music that range from the native Southern Rock of my upbringing to the drum and bass of my days spinning glowsticks to the country rhythms of times making out with girls on the backs of trucks to the garage revival of my times in seedy bars around Southern California to the stadium rock that I played in bands growing up to the teeny bopper pop that croons for the dance parties with just me and my daughter to the sweet sounds of all music that’s able to stir a feeling or emotion, or inspire some form of euphoric recall. But my greatest love is still this song. So much so that I used to sing it to my daughter while putting her to bed. A song that’s now 40, and while a lot has happened in science fiction since its release, I can still recall seeing most of the references over a satellite feed or at friends houses, staying up way past my bedtime. And it makes me happy. If you understand even half of the references then you are my kind of people. And if you don’t, it’s never too late. <3
