There are tons of plug-ins that you can install with Joomla to get a good, integrated forum. I would recommend that you experiment around with a few on a test site that runs the same version of Joomla as your production site before you go into full production. As a general rule, if it’s a forum, look for something that is included in Joomla rather than a bridge between Joomla and a stand-alone forum package, such as phpBB or something like that. My favorite two forums for Joomla are probably Kunena: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/communication/forum/7256 Or Agora: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/communication/forum/1891 Whatever forum package that you choose, don’t forget you’ll have to match up the template/theme…

Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants
I write a lot. There are the meanderings that appear on this site, the writing on the 318 TechJournal, more structured prose that goes into books (sometimes regrettably only slightly more structured), writing for clients, freelance writing, writing for other websites and even a bit of ghost writing here and there. Sometimes the writing is short, sometimes long, but there is a pretty consistent amount of it. The reason is because I enjoy it. Most of my writing is technical in nature. And like many who maybe learn a thing or two on my site I end up sharing tips or tricks from places that I no longer remember where…

10 Worst MySpace Apps
One of the contributors to the success that Facebook has had in the social networking world is the ability for savvy developers to build applications. MySpace has been picking up scraps from the Facebook strategy for some time and has followed suit with the ability to integrate custom applications. Now that MySpace has more than 50 pages of applications, I wanted to do a 10 best MySpace applications post. But beyond the RSS feeder I mentioned earlier and a couple of interesting apps that were also on Facebook (and were better in the Facebook iteration) I just couldn’t do it. Therefore, let’s take a look at some of the high…

MySpace RSS Integration
MySpace won’t die. Good. Competition breeds innovation and if social networks are to continue to become more and more useful then a somewhat healthy MySpace is simply going to keep the cog wheels turning in the otherwise spiderweb filled heads of talented engineers. MySpace introduced applications awhile back and there is now a pretty ample number, although nothing close to what Facebook has. I suppose there’s something to be said for being a day late and a dollar short, eh? Most of the applications, as with Facebook, aren’t that useful. Games to help you waste time and quizzes to help you inform your friends and coworkers that you haven’t stepped…

Stats vs. Anonymity
I could spend all my time reviewing site statistics or I could just write some articles. I typically choose to do the later. But occasionally (typically about once a month) I’ll look at the statistics for the site. Typically it’s just to see if the world is still an insane place and if people still view the dribble I tend to write here. But I see a lot of funny stuff in there and so those statistics tend to also afford me a bit of comedic relief. For example, images I use in my site are often used by others. I am guessing that the webmaster for a site simply…

More jQuery Goodness
jQuery is also a great solution for interconnecting various graphical elements and making them do things, like go get you coffee. One such aspect of what you can do is tilt graphics, assign perspective to them and have fluid controller motions. For example, the following script will perform somewhat of a vertical version of coverflow using just JavaScript accessible using jQuery. https://krypted.com//labs/coverflow/demo/vertical.html More examples can be found at: http://dev.jqueryui.com/browser/branches/labs

Leveraging jQuery for Input Validation
jQuery is the most popular JavaScript library in use at this point, finding its way into something around 20% of the largest websites in the world. One of the main reasons for this is that much of jQuery is meant to allow for working between JavaScript and Ajax. As such it often ends up getting used for graphical interfacing. One interesting use for graphics is to only allow someone to actually enter specific characters into fields. It is common to leverage input validation, but typically this includes validating the data that is submitted from a form; however, using jQuery, there is an AlphaNumeric script that only allows the use of…

tlho' SoH
https://krypted.com/ turns 6 today. Since December 2004 there have been over 1,500 posts, more unique and returning visitors than I ever thought possible and the site has evolved from its state in the 90’s up to 2004, which was my gateway into my home into a site that seems to help plenty of people. For that, I am thankful. Looking forward to the new year, ya’ll! -Charles [kml_flashembed movie=”/transparent1/Flip.swf” wmode=transparent]

Goodbye Shoutbox
The shoutbox has been removed from the sidebar. I agree with a poster that it was too much “bling.”
