Seagate Momentus FDE and the Mac

I’ve been asked by a number of people about using the Seagate Momentus FDE.2 or 7200 FDE laptop drives in a Mac to do Full Disk Encryption (FDE) without having to purchase third party software. Well, I tried it out and regrettably the answer here is that the Momentus drives will not work for much the same reason that ESX can’t work with the Mac: BIOS. The Mac uses EFI, not a BIOS and therefore a number of applications that bypass various forms of hardware abstraction (and in this case hardware that bypasses it) will not work on a Mac, even if you’re using Boot Camp to run Linux or…

Trackpad + Cold Fingers = Reboot

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but it gets kinda’ cold up here in Minnesota.  Sometimes, when it’s below zero and I go outside I will rush back in to grab an instant message or something of the sort and I invariably touch the trackpad.  Now, if I have been outside long enough for my fingers to get about as cold as it is out there (at least on the surface) then the trackpad will stop working.  In fact, not only will it shut down the trackpad, but it will also disable the keyboard.  Now, I can reboot and things work just fine, or I can plug in a USB…

Using OpenDNS for Web Content Filtering

OpenDNS is a great tool for free (kinda’), community managed web content filtration. We see this used more in education customers than corporate customers, but essentially you point your DNS at them (or your DNS servers as the case may be) and they filter out different kinds of content. As is often the case with free apps, you’re not going to get all the features you might get with some other applications, but OpenDNS is a great start, especially if you’re not currently doing any kind of filtering. To integrate it is very straight forward: sign up for a free account and define the address for your network in their…

    Another Widget: FCSMonitor

So the more the merrier, right?  Another widget, this time dedicated to Final Cut Server is now available for download.  I also went ahead and posted the https://krypted.com/ reader as well.  Both widgets are available here.  Please let me know if you have any problems with either one of them.  –Charles

    Xsan Monitor Widget Released (kinda')

I am releasing the Xsan Monitor that I've mentioned as alpha code. There are still some updates I may do but for now I'm putting it out there for those who feel this is the kind of thing they can take use of. Basically, it's a Dashboard Widget that can run on an Xsan client or metadata controller. When running it will display the CPU and RAM statistics of the Xsan processes. If it's the kind of thing you could use then please feel free to give it a test drive and let me know what you think at cedge@318.com or krypted@mac.com.

    Tech Predictions Rant

<rant> According to Mayan tradition if you jump into one of the cenotes by the Mayan pyramids you can make predictions as to the future. Apparently, one person predicted he would be a ruler and was thus anointed such. Funny how that works. Well, I cave dived into a cenote and then read the January editions of eWeek, ComputerWorld, NetworkWorld, CIO and about 10 other magazines that show up to my house despite the lack of funding on my part for them to do so. Let’s see if I can wade through the fluff… First off, January is a funny month for tech magazines as it’s all IT predications, “look…

    Twit netiquette

For a little while now my site has been automatically updating other sites when new articles are published.  The update was pretty much just a generic URL.  Then someone asked me to put a little more “meat in my tweet.”  Great point.  It’s a bit rude to pollute the various social networks of the world with useless information.  Ergo, I’ve gone ahead and included the title of my posts in my actual feeds.  Additionally, I’ve thrown a nice new background on the site to make it a bit less stark.  Hope you enjoy. Oh, and just for the record, I love the term “meat in my tweet!”  I think it’s hilarious…  😉
