    StorNext Command Line for Windows

StorNext for Windows comes with many of the same commands that are available with Xsan on Mac OS X. Located by default in the c:Program FilesStorNextbin directory, you can use the cv* commands in much the same way as on a Mac. This can help with regards to troubleshooting. For example, if you are having problems getting a volume to mount, even though it shows up when you go to map the drive in Client Configuration, you can use cvlabel -l (assuming your working directory is the StorNext bin directory) to see the LUNs that are accessible by your host. If you cannot see your LUNs then you also cannot…

Sync Bookmarks Between IE, Firefox & Safari

If you are a Safari user and you have a MobileMe account then you can already synchronize Safari bookmarks between multiple Macintosh computers.  But what if you want to synchronize to that corporate sanctioned Windows XP machine in the office that runs only Internet Explorer?  What if you also want to synchronize to Firefox, running on another machine?  All three can synchronize together in one harmonious bookmarking ménage à trois.  How is all of this made possible?Xmarks. Formerly Foxmarks, Xmarks now supports more browsers and runs on more platforms. You store a backup of your bookmarks in the Xmarks cloud (which, yes, means that you’ll need to create an account) and then you…

Getting Started with Amazon's EC2 Cloud

Yesterday I did a quick review of the various cloud offerings from Amazon. Previous to that I had done a review of using S3, the Amazon storage service, with Mac OS X, primarily through the lens of using S3 as a destination for Final Cut Server archives. Today I’m going to go ahead and look at using EC2 from Mac OS X. To get started, first download the EC2 tools from Amazon. Next, log into Amazon Web Services. If you don’t yet have a login you will obviously need to create one to proceed. Additionally, if you don’t yet have a private key you’ll need one of those too –…

    Disable SMB Signing

Mac OS X 10.5 supports SMB signing.  But if you have some older operating systems you may need to disable SMB signing when using Windows Server 2003 and up to host your files, typically when the 2003 Server is also a Domain Controller (DC).  To determine if SMB signing is required use Netmon (Network Monitor).  When using Netmon it is best to use a hub rather than a switch.  Once you have set the addresses and performed a capture, you’ll then look for the SMB negotiation string.  Options here are values of 3, 7 and 15 meaning SMB signing is disabled, enabled/not required and required respectively. If SMB signing is…

    Keystrokes For Windows/Windows Server Explorer

There’s nothing that makes you faster with navigating around any GUI-based OSen than keystrokes.  Navigate around the system, browse web pages and even swap between command windows at blazing speeds.  You’ll get faster but you’ll seem exponentially faster to those trying to watch you work.  I’ve done posts on Mac OS X and Safari.  Now, here’s one for navigating around Windows with the same speed with which you navigate OS X.  If I skipped something feel free to let me know and I’ll add it; there are a plethora of options and these are the ones off the top of my head…  While I was shooting for Windows Explorer, most…

Config AutoPlay (GUI & Registry) for Windows

When you insert a drive into a Windows, by default it’s gonna’ likely mount the drive (and run the autorun.inf if there is one or AutoPlay to play the music if it’s an audio disc). When you insert a disk or drive into a Windows computer you can hold down the Shift key and it will disable the auto-run and AutoPlay functionality of the system. But you can also control that functionality at a pretty granular level. The most common way to do so is likely using the Global Policy Editor. To do so, open gpedit.msc, click on Computer Configuration and then Administrative Templates, then System and select the option…

    Night Before Conficker: A Poem

Twas the night before April Fools day, when all through the IT department Not an admin was stirring, asleep with hands on their mouse The scans had been sent to the desktops with care, To ensure across the enterprise no conficker was there The users were nestled all snug in their beds And dreams of switching to Mac OS X danced in everyones heads. Don’t forget to run those scans before you go home today!

Mac OS X Server and WINS

I get a lot of questions about why a Windows computer cannot see a Mac OS X Server on the network when Macs can – or put differently why a Windows computer cannot browse the network for a Mac OS X Server. The first thing I always ask is can you ping it by IP address AND by name. If you can ping the host by IP address then you know the host can communicate with the client. If you cannot then you could be having DNS issues or NetBIOS issues. If you use DNS then that’s easy enough to fix, create or edit the record for the server and…

    Mono 2.0

Mono 2.0 allows .Net developers to use Linux, Solaris and Mac OS X.  Mono comes with MeMA, a tool that allows for automated .Net to Linux migrations away from .Net.  A lot is being made these days about Silverlight.  Look at what our friends from NetFlix have done for Mac users with it.  Well, the Mono framework was leveraged to write a Mono-based plugin compatible with Silverlight that they are calling Moonlight.  This is pretty cool because it allows Silverlight developers to convert their code into Moonlight and then publish it as an actual desktop application rather than a more web-oriented widget.  The open source community has provided a really…
