A blog is a stream of conscious. To some degree, so is an rss feed. If you are browsing it in rss then your reader will more than likely allow you to limit which articles you wish to see based on their tags or other information gleaned from the rss feed. For example, you can use feed://https://krypted.com//feed to access this page without graphics, which looks at the rss feed rather than the richer media content, including the css and other elements that cause graphics and the such to appear on the site. You can then limit your results to any field that is specified in the index.rss file. In this case,…

Google Latitude Added to whoami
I have added a Google Latitude embedded image that shows where I am at. You can find it on the whoami page of this site. Nice technology. For more on it see the little article I did for the 318 TechJournal this morning.

TextEdit for the Web
These days it seems like there’s a low-cost or free alternative to everything up on the web/in the clouds. This could be something like gMail for email, OpenDNS for DNS or even one of the many sites that provides users with file storage. Now enter j.otdown.com. Using this service you can type text to your hearts content. When you stop typing a url will be generated and automatically saved. You can then use that URL to revisit your document at a later time. You can also use the Share button to then email the link to others. For example, this document was created and shared by yours truly. It’s got…

Site Maintenance
Due to load, the site is being moved to a new server. As such, for the time being, there are some features that are not acting properly. The first is with Permalinks in WordPress 2.8. Basically, if you’ve come to the site through a search engine you may need to search within the site for the page that you are looking for. Pages are all still there, just might not be in the same path you came to. Simply use the search dialog at the top of the page for the search terms and the site will get you there. Second, the site might be down for a little while…

Bug in WordPress 2.8
In WordPress there are tags, such as the ones you see at the bottom of this article. You enter tags when you’re writing an article in the Post Tags section of the Add New Post page. Prior to WordPress 2.8 you could enter a bunch of tags and just hit the Publish button, the tags would be committed automatically. Now though, you enter the tags and hit the Publish button and they are not committed. You have to use the Add button to commit the tags, then hit the Publish button. This has always been a feature, but both used to work. For me, breaking a third party plug-in is…

Boobies on Facebook
Today I found a game/app in my Facebook feed called Vrais ou faux seins ? The application has blatantly exposed breasts. I can’t speak French so I can’t tell what it is about, but the pictures sure seem to tell a pretty compelling story. I’m sure that the good people at Facebook will end up finding the application and removing it soon enough. But it brings up, again, the changes that the increasing globalization that the Internet has brought about. And in my standard Facebook feed… It’s not that I care. I don’t. It’s more just watching culture classes as they continue to emerge. Much like Google’s Schmidt leveraging…

Short URL Lengthening Safely
When you see a short URL such as http://is.gd/w, these days it is actually referencing a valid, longer URL. This URL shortening has come about due to the character limitations for services such as Twitter. The way I’m doing this these days is using a Firefox add-on called Short URL Generator. However, as of late there have been some scams that have been pointing those tiny URLs to URLs that are dangerous. So funny enough I have another Firefox add-on called Long URL Please that I’m using to verify that I like a URL prior to actually clicking on it, especially from a Windows box. And if you’re not using…

New Graphics
In a further step to refine the site so it’s less of a drain on your browsers (and my boxen) I’ve further tweaked the graphical elements in the site. It’s a little simpler, with the graphics comprised of sub-20KB files. There are also less of them, which I hope will improve performance. Stress tests seem to indicate that it can handle about 12,000 concurrent users. 🙂 Also, sorry for skipping some posts. I was at WWDC and have been diligently working on my next book.

Find Your Handle
Nothing kills me more than going to a new site and finding the username I like to use isn’t available any more. There are a number of sites out there that require you to create a username. Some day many may centralize around a unified approach such as OpenID, but until then how can you sear around all the various popular sites to find which ones still have the handle you like to use? Check out usernamecheck.com!
