According to IDC, leasing and financing of IT software and services is on the rise by around 20% per year and hardware leasing and financing is up around 4% per year. And in 2009 the market for leasing and financing is to be at above $100 Billion. The largest of these financiers is IBM Global Financing, with 3,000 employees and a whopping $36 Billion in assets and has promised to finance another two Billion towards American Recovery and Reinvestment Act projects. It seems like the hope though is that when these leases reach maturity that the organizations will be able to roll into new leases or buy new hardware, software…

Technology Leadership and Innovation
The economy sucks. There is no doubt that any and every company is taking a look at costs and trying to find ways to streamline them. As such, IT leadership is being asked to do more with the same budget, or in many cases with less of a budget, or in some cases the IT leadership is being moved out of the executive suite altogether. It seems like a daily occurrence that a C-level or D-level IT professional is asking me how I think they can go about innovating the organization with less of a budget to do so. As an experiment I asked a number of people who I…

The New CTO
One of my favorite parts of my job is to act as an outsourced CTO for companies. In some cases it is more of acting as lateral support for incumbent CIO/CSO types, which actually works out really well in a number of cases. In those cases I really more help to define the technical guidance for organizations. In some cases the organization is too small for a C-level and it’s more of acting as a Director of IT, in others it’s simply as a supplement to another C-level for dispute resolution. And like many CTOs I once focused on computers, servers and backbones. But how quickly technology can redefine an…

Data Domain
Data Domain appears to be the next casualty of the swift consolidation of IT vendors. NetApp and EMC continue in what has become a bidding war in the acquisition of Data Domain. NetApp began the bidding at $1.5 Billion and it has slowly eked its way up to $1.9 Billion. What are they buying? Something they both already claim to have a really good solution for, data de-duplication. While this acquisition is not as big of a deal as other recent buyouts it is worth noting. NetApp and EMC are becoming bitter rivals and the technology and research and development that each is looking to acquire via Data Domain would…

On the Road: Northwest + Delta = ?
In corporate mergers and acquisition land transition periods can be difficult when they’re not managed with the appropriate level of planning and foresight. Northwest is based out of Minneapolis and when I moved here I started flying on them exclusively (which isn’t hard to do since most flights are through them anyway). The Northwest and Delta merger have led to a new credit card being issued to me, new logos here and there, lots of snail mail about how my miles will be handled (too much snail mail =’s white noise btw) and other than that, very little annoyance. It’s been a pretty smooth run thus far. But of course,…

Google Outage
When a large company loses email and other services the help desk is abuzz with calls. But who do you call when an outsourced vendor goes down? I’ve read a number of reports about the Google outage from a few days ago. Having millions of users without service, or with deprecated service, is a lot of potential calls. Just like tens of thousands in an enterprise is lot when those users cannot access email. In the reports I’ve read people were taking a very strong stance on the outage, not necessarily with Google directly, but identifying cloud support options across the board as having “no one to call.” Really? There’s…

Amazon S3 from the Command Line
In a previous article we looked at how to upload Final Cut Server content to s3 using Jungle Disk. We also looked at how to upload ec2 images to s3. But now we’re going to take a deeper dive into using s3 from the command line. There are a number of tools that have been developed by the community to leverage Amazon’s S3 Storage Service. This isn’t as cut and dry as using ec2 due to the fact that the Amazon tools are written in Java, C#, Perl, PHP, Ruby and Python. However, I’m a shell kinda’ guy to a large degree and I was able to find a couple of places where people have written…

10 Quick SysAdmin Time Savers
I’m not gonna’ lie to you, I’m a pretty lazy admin. As such, I look for ways to reduce the amount of typing I have to do routinely. And ways to not make mistakes that I made when I was young and needed the rupies. The more time I spend at the command line, the more I use these, so here goes (hope they help you in some way shape or form): Make your own bin and put stuff you use often in there. You can use any folder you like and just include it in the export PATH=$PATH line by throwing a : at the end and typing that path.…
