    Primordial Storage

Primordial storage refers to unallocated storage capacity on a storage device. Storage capacity can be allocated from primordial pools to create storage pools. This means that primordial pools are disk/device sources for allocation of storage pools.  In Xsan primordial pools aren’t used but there is often unused capacity in the form of LUNs that are referred to as primordial at time.  Especially on a Promise RAID where you might have certain LUNs that are smaller than the potential size of others and therefore might end up with disks left over which can be mapped and used as near-line storage later.  This term, primordial, can be used to refer to those.

    iMovie: Importing Video

Importing video into iMovie from your camera couldn’t be easier.  Just power up your camera, put it into camera play mode and then plug it into you computer.  This will bring up a player window with a button that says Automatic and another that says Import.  You can manually find the places on the tape where you want to import video and switch Automatic to Manual or you can just leave it on Automatic and let iMove import pretty much the whole tape.

Mac OS X: Continuing to Reduce Image Sizes

We discussed reducing your image size by about 700MB in this article: Mac OS X: Alex.SpeechVoice But if you’re building your image from a host that has already fired up once then there’s likely to be a 2GB or 4GB file called sleepimage in /var/vm.  This file is recreated on startup if it’s not present and needed.  This will allow you to reduce image sizes by 2GB to 4GB.  If you want to get rid of the file permanently on your imaging station you can run the following command: pmset hibernatemode 0 Since you’ll likely want systems to use this feature run the command on your imaged clients with a…

    Safari Online

Safari books online is pretty amazing.  I can search for anything and then read only the relevant passage in the book as needed.  I just can’t read entire IT books cover-to-cover like I used to any more.  That seemed to stop when I started to write my own books.  But, when I’m googling for something I am getting way more false positives than I’d like and so now I will first go to Safari, and then to the wider world of Google…

    Interview Tips: March 2007

If you wear a tie to an interview, do not take it off during the interview.  If you wear a jacket to an interview you may take it off, but then, it might just not be prudent unless it is very much too hot for you in a room.  Disrobing is just not a very professional way to conduct oneself in an interview, even if the interviewer is wearing sandals and a t-shirt.

Exchange 2007: OWA Virtual Directories from PowerShell

Get a list of all of your virtual directories from PowerShell using this command: Get-OwaVirtualDirectory If you are having an issue with a specific virtual directory then you can delete it using this command: Remove-OwaVirtualDirectory “owa (Default Web Site)” In the above command we used owa but we could have also used Exchange, Public, Exchweb or Exadmin.  To recreate the directory use the following command (again replacing owa in the “” portion of the command with the specified virtual directory you are recreating: New-OwaVirtualDirectory -OwaVersion “Exchange2007″ -Name “owa (Default Web Site)” Because Exchange, Public, Exchweb and Exadmin are not native to Echange 2007 then you would actually replace Exchange2007 with Exchange2003or2000.…
