    AFP, Xsan, Failover & Tokens

When an AFP connection moves to idle, a token is used to establish a reconnect. By default, AFP stores tokens in the local /etc/AFP.conf. But in order to have users reconnect if they move between servers, as in a failoverd event or even in a more active/active relationship with a load balancer you need to move the shared cache to a shared location. To do so you’ll edit the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist file using the defaults command. The key that you’ll need to change is the reconnectKeyLocation, specifying the string in the key that corresponds to the path to the local server that is running afp to the volume. Therefore, if the…

Mac OS X 10.5: Screen Sharing as an Application

I originally posted this at http://www.318.com/TechJournal Screen Sharing is a new feature in Leopard that allows you to control machines that appear in your side bar. However, you can actually open Screen Sharing and use it in a similar manner as how you use an application like Chicken of the VNC (although not with an identical feature set). The way you go about this is to create a shortcut to the Screen Sharing application bundle from the /System/Library/CoreServices/Screen Sharing.app file somewhere else, such as the Applications folder, or maybe just put it in your dock. Then you can run the following command: defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing ShowBonjourBrowser_Debug 1 You will now…

    Interview Tips: January 2007

Have you read my blog?  Do you have a team you think is better than my Bulldogs?  Well, if you’re smart then you’re not likely to bring it up during an interview.  Don’t get me wrong, I might still hire you.  But then again, I might not.

    Open Source and Development

I originally posted this at http://www.318.com/TechJournal Developers of code have always been fairly open with their tips and tricks. New advancements in the websphere come fast and many of them come from the open source community. Led by people like Linus Torvalds, the original author of Linux, the open source ommunity has rewritten many of the most popular proprietary applications on the market and made them freely available to the world, asking only that if they don’t sell the code you don’t turn around and sell the code as well. This was the foundation for the web. Apache, the most popular web server in use, is a product of the…

    Georgia – Hokies

31-24, Georgia tops Hokies by one score.  Not bad considering both have had rocky seasons.  I was beginning to think our bowling days didn’t go so well (2002 vs. BC, then WVU).  Richt isn’t exactly sucking against non-conference opponents…

    Xsan: Unresponsive Xsan Admin

There are times with Xsan when the admin utility sits unresponsive (the pinwheel at the bottom of the screen spins annoyingly to no end).  When the Admin tool gets unresponsive you are typically staring down the barrel of some kind of naming issue.  In these cases I almost universally have DNS administrators tell me that everything is fine without first bothering to actually look at the records for the hosts on the SAN.  The easy way to verify this hypothesis is to build a custom hosts file (/etc/hosts).  This bypasses the DNS resolver and if everything loads up correctly then you do indeed have a DNS/host naming issue.

    2 Years Strong

https://krypted.com/ has been going for two years now.  I wasn’t really sure if I would manage to post very often when I started it, and I don’t.  But once a month (sometimes way more) isn’t too bad, right…
