    Snow Leopard Server Videos

A number of videos I’ve been working on for Snow Leopard Server topics. My first time experimenting with YouTube playlists so please be gentle if it’s weird looking… They’ll be posted individually into the 318 TechJournal shortly. These are mostly covering the new features of Mac OS X 10.6 Server, although some of the older videos might be on other topics.

    Snow Leopard & Malware

An article on ZDNet that states that Snow Leopard has anti-malware built into it (thanks Dee-Ann): http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=4104&tag=nl.e589 Side note: I wonder whether or not they read the EULA for their pre-released software? I realize that release date is really just a few days from now, but come on guys… Just wait a couple of days to post these things…

Foundations of Mac Snow Leopard Security

I’ve been asked by a number of people whether or not we will be updating the Mac OS X security book I did a couple of years ago for Apress to Snow Leopard.  The answer is yes.  We are currently working on the updates and hope to have it available by December.  The book will undergo a number of changes/improvements, as all second editions should.  I’ll update when it’s available on Amazon & of course, in stores.

DeployStudio: Creating a New Master Image

Once you have been using DeployStudio for a time, you’ll invariably end up creating a new master image.  This is a hot topic this summer, given that Apple will be releasing Mac OS X 10.6 later this year and many people integrating DeployStudio want to make sure that they can manage the solution themselves during the subsequent updates.  Provided you have been leveraging all of the best in package based imaging this might be a relatively small file, or if you are using a monolithic image for distribution it might be a fairly large file.  Either way, DeployStudio makes it fairly straight forward to create a new master image.  To…

    Windows 7 in October

If Mac OS X 10.6, Snow Leopard will be shipping in September then the earlier the better. The arrival of Windows 7 will come on October 22nd. Likely less than a month after Snow Leopard, Windows 7 is what many companies have been waiting for to get migration projects lit up. While there are a number of new features, few are more important to companies than the fact that it is very capable of running on new or old hardware alike. Windows 7 adoption shouldn’t stop you from buying now though, if you’re in the market for a new machine. Microsoft announced that it will include a Windows Upgrade Option…

Design Considerations: Exchange 2007 and the Mac

In Exchange 2007, the Client Access Server (CAS) role accepts connections from clients in order to allow them access to the Exchange Server infrastructure (mailboxes, public folders, GAL, etc). CAS accepts connections from: POP3 and/or IMAP4 clients Outlook Web Access (OWA) and/or OWA Light clients Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) clients Entourage falls into this category, and so when you are deploying Exchange 2007 alongside Entourage you will point your clients at your host running CAS.  This is a change from previous versions, where you could enable IIS on any host and point clients there; however, it is similar in that CAS is very similar to the front end functionality that this…
