Tiny Deathstars of Foulness

The title of this one ended up a bit more FUDy than I’d prefer, but the content’s mostly what I provided.

With the rise of SMB-friendly backup solutions like CrashPlan, Carbonite, Mozy, and Backblaze, small businesses will choose to back up their systems with alternatives to expensive tape libraries, software to drive those libraries, and countless hours spent restoring files. As more cloud-based security attacks happen, businesses will realize that having a solid backup is one of the most important aspects to device security.

Oh, and in case anyone (Mosen/Dials) is bothered by the fact that I’m reblogging articles I do above and beyond what I do on Krypted, it’s my way of keeping track of all my other writings. And no, while I do write for Huff Post now, I don’t smoke weed (like ever). But thanks for your perspectives, I’ll try and up my game since you feel my contributions to the community were not enough while I was writing three books on Mac management (two are now shipping, the third will be shortly)… 😉

Oh, and I was serious about doing a long-term podcast. Now that my after-hours schedule is freeing up, I’m game to get on that! <3

Bushel shipping a new feature this week call Blueprints. Blueprints are similar to groups, and allow you to assign different options in Bushel to different devices that have a blueprint assigned to them. This also allows you to define one device per blueprint and therefore have different options for different computers. Pretty cool on a few different fronts. And it provides a lot of flexibility for some really, really cool new features we’ve planned for the product.

Bushel is a software startup that provides better ways to setup and secure Apple devices. We don’t have a brick and mortar retail location. But my first job was managing retail POS systems back in the 90s and I’ve had a lot of friends who had retail locations over the years. And they’ve taught me some things. These things may or may not be appropriate for your organization, but they’re worth checking out!

The new iPad Pro is pretty much the most ridiculously luxurious device I’ve seen in a long, long time. It’s huge. There are still many of the same limitations as on an iPad. The lack of browser plug-ins keeps us from accessing certain types of content. There isn’t access to the Finder as with OS X. But the screen is ridiculously massive and provides a whole new way to view data. It’s a beautiful, marvelous piece of technology. When we were looking at Bushel and the blog on on it, we suddenly found the top and bottom bars of Safari to be just a bit too much lost screen real estate. And it made me think of yet another benefit of Web Clips: getting more screen real estate.

A common question we get in the media is whether or not an employer can look at email on an employees device. The answer is that an employer cannot use Bushel to see mail or content on a device. This isn’t to say that you can’t use your Exchange, Office 365, or Google Apps administrative accounts to view your email. But Bushel doesn’t have anything to do with that.

Bushel gives you three devices for free. But you can get more free devices if you like the product and choose to share it with your friends and family. To do so is pretty straight forward. Simply click on the Accounts icon in the sidebar and then click on the Profile tab. Here, towards the bottom of the screen, you’ll see the Referrals section.

Posted an article on the As through Zs on managing IT in the small business at CBS Pulse at http://cbspulse.com/2015/10/09/a-through-z-managing-smb-it/. This is another of the small business articles I’ve been working on for Bushel. Expect more! And if you’re into this kind of thing specifically, let me know if there are any cool topics you’d like me to cover!

For the second time this month, Apple has released a major new operating system. Today, OS X 10.11 El Capitan became available in the Mac App Store. We are pleased to announce that, even with the significant changes in the operating system, Bushel extends full compatibility to Macs running this latest release. That means that all of your managed Macs within Bushel can be upgraded to OS X 10.11 and new Macs can be enrolled as well. In other words, your users should take advantage of this free software update!

JAMF Software has long had 0 day support for new Apple releases. The latest version of Bushel allows you to enroll El Capitan devices. Casper 9.8 also allows you to enroll devices. There are certainly going to be subsequent updates that allow us to do even more. This was a tricky one, as the jamf binary had to be moved and there were some new enrollment policies, to keep your Apple devices as secure as possible!

Bushel is SaaS, so it’s available today. Casper should be updated. You can access our installers using your My Assets page on JAMF Nation. Happy updating!
