As an author, I’m pretty interested in the changing face of the publishing industry. Tim O’Reilly was on the cover of Inc magazine this month and I’ve been following his musings about publishing for some time. But this whole digital publishing thing has to make an author think about what it means for us. But as a geek, I’m stuck in the technical, wondering if I were to self-publish something straight to the iPad, what would it look like? Not the content, but the files.

ePub seems to be the main focus of e-book devices and where the industry is going to go. ePub is a format ratified by the International Digital Publishing Forum (PDPF) and based on XHTML. ePub support will be built into the upcoming version of a couple of different software packages, most notably Scrivener. For software that has ePub support, you can export out of the software easily as an ePub file. These files can then be viewed from iBooks on the iPad, i2Reader on the iPhone, Calibre on Mac OS X/Windows/Linux and Aldiko for Android.

Now how to reach the masses and get them to buy, download and read your content is another story. Currently, Amazon allows you to submit content to the Kindle store and Aldiko allows you to copy ePub files directly to an Android through the use of an SD card. Lulu should allow content to go directly to the iBookstore, but for those of us with an eye to publish to the iPad will need to wait for a few more details to unfold. In the meantime, read up on ePub if you’re interested in self-publishing (especially on the DRM capabilities) and I’ll post something here when I’m ready to announce any projects I have in the poker going that direction. Also, in the meantime feel free to pick up the 1st edition of the Mac OS X security book I did on Kindle.

The iPad is leveraging the new A4 chip from Apple, the first time Apple has released their own chip. Running at 1GhZ, the A4 is an ARM-based chip. The A4 is similar, if not the the ARM Coretex-A9 MPCore processor with graphics brought to you by the ARM Mali 50, capable of 720p hi-def video. These chips are what are referred to as System on a Chip, which stands for SOC. An SOC has a processor, graphics and memory together on the chip. If this sounds similar to an Atom chip, such as Moorestown from Intel then you’re not crazy, it is. This is similar to the Snapdragon chips from Qualcom, the Nexus One from Google and the Tegra from NVIDIA.

<conjecture>

The speed of the chip and the power saving is probably the most interesting thing about the iPad. While the design is similar, albeit bigger than the iPhone and iPod Touch, the underlying chip allows it to remain snappy despite higher workloads, giving developers a little more to play with. What all this means to the consumer: expect development of tools the far surpass those available to the iPhone and iPod Touch. And with 10 hours of battery life it will be interesting to see how the product shakes out.

Apple has been interfacing with YouTube for some time. They have provided YouTube integration into a number of their consumer applications and clearly understand how to aggregate content from YouTube and interface with the YouTube API. Apple also has some of the best marketing of the past 10 or more years. But until now, Apple has been quiet on the YouTube front. Now, with the introduction of the iPad, Apple has quietly started a YouTube presence. I can’t help but wonder what Apple has in store for the field of interactive marketing!

It’s really easy to bash on a company when they do something that bugs you. And let’s face it, since we pay companies our hard earned money (well, most of us earn it, others just kinda’ find it), we expect the world of companies. And in Apple’s case, we expect them to be flawless, and we scour over every line of code or every feature looking for the mistake they made so we can exploit it, er, I mean, complain about it. But what about when one of our beloved vendors does something that is just kinda’ awesome?

I don’t remember when it showed up (I don’t even remember when any of my own stuff showed up). But I was on iTunes today and something occurred to me. There’s a little i on each album. Clicking on it produces an overlay. Using buttons beside song titles, you can sample each song. You can even buy the album from there. You can still close the overlay and be back on the screen you came from. The user experience, the thought into each and every detail is amazing in iTunes. So props to that guy (I feel like a Budweiser commercial) – you know, the guy who came up with that idea… Before I get back to complaining, this Bud’s for you!Similar Articles:
