    Password Protecting QuickTime Streams

Password protecting QuickTime Streaming Server is a bit different than password protecting most other Mac OS X services. For starters, you should define a local QTSS Users file and a local Groups file. for the server. You can do so using /Library/QuickTimeStreaming/Config/qtusers and /Library/QuickTimeStreaming/Config/qtgroups respectively. Each user can be defined in the qtusers file and each group in the qtgroups file should contain the pertinent users on a line with the name of the group, followed by a colon (:) followed by the users that make up the group. In order to password protect a stream served by Quick Time Streaming Server you will then need to create a text…

    Flow: Amazon S3, iDisk

Flow is a nice little FTP client. But it also supports WebDAV and SFTP as well as Amazon’s S3 and mounting an iDisk from a Mobile Me account. Unlike JungleDisk it doesn’t seem to mount S3 as an actual disk in Mac OS X, but it can be used to take files from iDisk to S3, which is fairly interesting. Flow also supports discovering all of the local services over Bonjour, which can be pretty helpful. Overall, it’s a nice little application that’s pretty sleek and I look forward to seeing where they go with it.

    Bootp Relaying & Troubleshooting NetBoot

I’ve seen a couple of posts on groups recently with people asking why they’re unable to NetBoot clients. Personally, I always verify that clients are able to obtain a DHCP lease and that the NetBoot server shows up in the Startup Disk System Preference pane. Provided those two things work then you will usually be able to NetBoot. Both of these can be verified when booted from an installer or an installed system (checking both never hurt anyone). Next, break out your crossover cable (well, many a Mac doesn’t need one any more). If you can NetBoot when connected directly to a server then you’re usually looking at an infrastructure…

    Snow Leopard & Malware

An article on ZDNet that states that Snow Leopard has anti-malware built into it (thanks Dee-Ann): http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=4104&tag=nl.e589 Side note: I wonder whether or not they read the EULA for their pre-released software? I realize that release date is really just a few days from now, but come on guys… Just wait a couple of days to post these things…

Snow Leopard to Ship on August 28th

It’s official: Snow Leopard will be shipping on August 28th, a full month ahead of schedule!!!  See the front page of Apple.com to some of the concept art that goes along with this important release of Mac OS X (not that many of you haven’t already gotten a sneak peak at it from the rumor sites). What’s new? The Finder has been re-written in Cocoa, the whole OS is 64 bit, all the old PPC (non-Intel/i386) code is out, making the OS smaller/sleeker/leaner, Stacks got some new graphics, automatic updates for printer (can you say third party) drivers (hopefully a framework that will have Office & Adobe products added to…

Adding a Role in Windows Server 2008

Installing services in Windows Server has always been a straight forward affair.  In Windows Server 2008, much of the role addition is wizardly and provides administrators with a guided setup.  To get started, open Server Manager from Start -> Administrative Tools.  Then, click on Roles under the appropriate server in the side bar to the left of the screen.  Next, click on Add Roles and then after reading the Before You Begin screen, click on the Next button. At the listing of available roles, click on the role you would like to install and highlight the checkbox for the role, clicking on the Next button once all roles that you…

Speaking at MacSysAdmin 2009 in Sweden

MacSysAdmin 2009 will be held in the Burgårdens Konferenscenter in the center of Göteborg, Sweden. I’ve just been added to the roster of speakers, effectively bringing down the average Knowledge of speakers by at least 1d6. But I’ll try and keep ya’ entertained at the least. Hope you can make it and thanks to Tycho for the opportunity!
