Final Cut Server: Prepare Media For Disconnected Use

Using Final Cut Server it is possible to still use assets that are stored on the server even when the workstation is offline (not on the same network as the Final Cut Server).  This allows users to work on projects using assets from Final Cut Server over a VPN, on an airplane or from a hotel room.  When you control-click on an asset you can select the Prepare for Disconnected Use to cache the primary representation.   At this point if you browse to the ~/Documents/Final Cut Server/Media Aliases you can drag the file into a Final Cut Pro project and edit away.

Mac OS X Server: GUI Security for MySQL

Prior to Mac OS X 10.5 MySQL was administered in a stand-alone application.  In 10.5, MySQL has been moved into Server Admin.  Many of the security-centric aspects of MySQL should be managed in the my.cnf file or using MySQL tools.  However, you can disable network connections using Server Admin unless the database actually needs to be accessed from hosts other than the server. Additionally, many administrators who lack the time to turn MySQL into a bastille of security choose to implement PHPMyAdmin with Mac OS X Server to easily update settings they might not be so quick to find in the command line.

Georgia Hangs on to Beat Vanderbilt

#10 in the nation, UGA hang on this weekend to knock off #20 Vanderbilt, 24-14.  Vanderbilt put up a good fight until the end.  The first release of the BCS standings comes out on Sunday and Georgia will certainly be somewhere in the top 10.  Next weekend the Dawgs take on #13, LSU and shortly there after get #8 Florida.   If the Bulldogs can hang on to win the remaining games on the schedule then the SEC Championship game will likely net a rematch between UGA and #2 Alabama, who shot up the rankings when they won the game the first time around.

    Windows XP: Another Six Months

Windows XP is a 7 year old operating system.  Microsoft ads on TV tell us that we should move to Vista.  They put a deadline in place.  According to Devil Mountain Software and a few others, more than one third of Windows systems are still being downgraded to XP though.  What more can Microsoft do?  Well, the deadline of January 31st to stop allowing OEM manufacturers to sell XP has been extended.  You will now be able to purchase Vista and then have a downgrade option through to July of 2009, at which point XP will be well over 8 years old.  Pundits say Vista sales are up, but really…

Final Cut Server: Viewing Job Status

When Final Cut Server is converting a file from one format to another, importing files, etc. a job is added to the queue.  To view the status of these jobs, click on the menu button and click on Search All Jobs. You will see the last jobs run, which can be a lot of jobs in some instances.  Now click on the disclosure triangle next to the magnifying glass and you will see a list of search parameters.  You can then switch Status to Equals and enter FAIL in the status box as seen here.   If you click on the search button you will only see failed jobs.  You…

    Vice Presidential Email

David C. Kernell must have been very curious about what a vice presidential hopefuls email might contain.  The 20-year-old got into Sarah Palin’s email (I’m sure he guessed her password was jesus) and now finds himself indicted for a single count of accessing a protected computer, which means he can get up to five years in the big house and a quarter million dollar fine.  All in all, it seems like if you were going to break into someone’s email it might be more interesting to log into Joe Biden’s (password = geezer), McCain’s (password=nukeiraq) or O’Bama’s (password = IAMNOTATERRORISTDAMNIT).   But really, what would the point be, to see…

    Interview Tips – October 2008

Following up.  Following up after an interview is a great idea.  It keeps you freshly in the mind of the interviewer, shows you are interested and indicates that you are proactive.  One follow up is great.  More is questionable to me, but might be OK to do others according to the industry. For example, in sales, tenacity can be of great value. But for most other positions, more than two is going to possibly draw the ire of the interviewer.
